In the latter part of the 20th century, the Haida people fought for something they had never relinquished: indigenous sovereignty.
Beginning in the late 1700's, European explorers began to visit the Haida Gwaii. Their actions and attitudes profoundly affected Haida society and nearly destroyed a vibrant culture that had existed for over 12 millennia.
In the beginning, there were the stories, art, dances, and songs created by a strong and resilient people deeply connected to their natural world. So began my journey to learning about the First Nation Haida of the Haida Gwaii Islands, British Columbia.
This is a story about the people of the Haida Gwaii and their connection with their world. Our visit to their islands in 2024 profoundly deepened my appreciation for these strong people, their vibrant culture, and the challenges they have overcome. I have attempted to encapsulate some of that in the following pages.
